Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: AN SWER FOR LORI FROM FLORIDA
Your Question or Comment !! -: Since Edmond Stevens was a survivor, there is no listing for him. The escape you described is possible, and there are stories of escapes from the prison but most of the time no names are given. His time frame as a prisoner in Salisbury may be from Oct. 1864 to Feb. 1865. Oct. was a very large influx of prisoners from Richmond and the prison closed in Feb. 1865. I suggest checking a published regimental history on the 111th NY Reg. or applying for his service records from the Washington Archives.

Your Question or Comment !! -: I would like to know if Edmond Stevens was a POW at Salisbury. He was in Co. G, 111th NY Volunteers and was probably at Salisbury from August 1864 till April 1865. Also, he supposedly escaped the prison by getting on a wagon of dead bodies being taken out of the prison. Any records on prison escapes?

Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: Richard Sheerin, 5th NY Heavy Artillery
Your Question or Comment !! -: Initally incarcerated at Libby Prison then transferred to Salisbury. I know this from letters to his parents and family accounts of returning soliders who were there with him. Eyewitness told his parents he was very ill. They last saw him down by a stream that ran through the camp. Records show him as a deserter but in the book this has been crossed out. I was told he probably was offered medical care if he renounced the Union. He never came home. Wonder if any work is being done with DNA on the remains in the trenches. Also, if he did renounce the Union, where would he have been buried?

Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: ANSWER FOR LARRY FROM OHIO
Your Question or Comment !! -: There is no listing for James R. Brown, 51st NY Vol. If he survived, there would be no listing as no lists exist for those who survived. Being captured at Peebles' Farm, he would have first gone to one of the Richmond prisons. He may or not have been transferred to Salisbury in the beginning of Oct. 1864. Some of the existing lists for Salisbury do show members of the 51st NY. as being there. Try to find a published regimental history or apply for his service records from the Washington Archives. Supply as much info as possible when applying as James R. Brown is a common name.

Your Question or Comment !! -: I know Ira Tewksbury is buried in the trenches at the National Cemetery and I know he died while a CW prisoner on Feb. 5, 1865. I know he was listed in the dead book Volume 2, page 352. Is there any record of his arrival at Salisbury? Where would the dead book be if it still existed? Is there any sense for the order in which men were buried in the trenches: for example: the first trench used was the one on the north of the row of trenches. Has GPR ever been utilized to determine the extent of anomalies in the soil, indicating that burials may have also been outside the identified trenches?

Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: ANSWER FOR DENISE SHELTON FROM NY & CALIF.
Your Question or Comment !! -: Richard Sheerin, Battery F, 5th NY Heavy Art., is listed in Appendix N-1 as a deserter. I can find no other listing for him. Deserters from a prison are not the usual type of deserter. Very few deserted because they were in sympathy with the Confederacy. For most of them, it was an attempt at survival, receiving warm clothes, food and possibly medical help. It sounds like Sheerin waited too long to "desert," dying somewhere outside the prison. If this is the case, its hard to say where he would have been buried, perhaps not even in a cemetery. Try researching his unit, maybe you can locate a letter or diary of a comrade who knows Sherrin's final disposition. Local newspapers and historical societies for Sherrin's home area in NY might be a good place to start.

Your Question or Comment !! -: My great-grandfather's brother Richard Sheerin (sometimes misspelled in records) was a with the 5th NY Heavy Artillery. He was captured in October 1864 and joined the rebel army in December 1864. I've been told that this may have been in order to receive medical treatment. The last word that the family had was from a witness who saw him "by the river, very sick" and then did not see him again. One online record lists him as having survived the war but he never came home and it seems unlikely that this is true. Are there any records that might have listed his death that are not available online?

Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: ANSWER FOR JOHN LITTLEFIELD FROM MAINE
Your Question or Comment !! -: There are no known lists of who were just prisoners in Salisbury; Brown's appendices show lists of some who were in the hospital, deserted, or died, and these are far from accurate. I suggest trying to track them through a published regimental history, state archives, federal archives. If you go through the federal archives, furnish as much info as possible as these are common names.

Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: ANSWER FOR LINDA FROM NEW YORK
Your Question or Comment !! -: Brown's Appendix P lists Edward Morris, 146th NY, Co. H, as being in the hospital. No other info was found. If he died in the hospital or after being discharged, he would have been buried in one of the unknown trenches. If he remained in the hopital, when Salisbury closed in Feb. 1865, he could have died enroute to Richmond and buried anywhere along the route. Records for this are very, very poor.

Your Question or Comment !! -: I have a relative who died in 1865 at Salisbury , I believe North Carolina ( my family was always told tennesee but I can't find a Salisbury tenn). I believe he was born in Franklin county, Mcupin Carlinwell Illinois about 1845 or so. I always thought Salisbury was just a hospital for wounded soldiers, but just now found out it was a prison camp, any information would be great for our family. Thank you
How did you discover the info you have now?: From a written statement maybe a death record from 1865, and I think he might have been wounded and then died at Salisbury or maybe imprisoned and then died there, and that's about all we have.
