Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: ANSWER FOR FELICIA FROM NEBRASKA
Your Question or Comment !! -: There is probably no info on where Oliver Moyer was captured. Your quickest resource is to check a regimental history for the 97th NY and perhaps there is an attached muster roll of its members. If not here, my next suggestion would be to send for his service records through the National Archives.

Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: Nathan Mackie and Jesse Mackie
Your Question or Comment !! -: Thanks for operating this website. Nathan Mackie (1829-1865) and Jesse Mackie (1839-1878) were Quakers from Deep Creek Friends Meeting, Yadkin County, North Carolina. According to family tradition, Nathan and Jesse made leather goods at the Robert Mackie tannery in Yadkinville for the Confederate Army. This occupation made them exempt from military service. At some point they became clerks at the Confederate Prison Camp in Salisbury. When the camp was liberated, Nathan and Jesse walked with other prisoners to Camp Chase, Ohio. When crossing the Ohio River, Nathan caught pneumonia and died at the prison camp. In 1854, Nathan Elizabeth Tennessee Reece of Yadkinville. They had one chld, a daughter, who married and produced children. Their descendants are living today. His brother, Jesse Mackie, survived the War and returned to Yadkin County, where he married Phisa Rebecca Williams, and had five children. I am one of Jesse and Phisa's desendants. He is my great-great grandfather. Jesse died in 1878 at the age of 38. He is buried in the new cemetery at Deep Creek Friends Meeting, Yadkinville, NC. Reference: The Heritage of Yadkin County, North Carolina [Volume I], Yadkinville: The Yadkin County Historical and Genealogical Society, 1981, full reprint, 1991. I want to know more about Nathan and Jesse's service at the prison camp. I hope someone will contact me.

He reported to me that Nathan Mackie was the last person to be buried there and wanted to erect a new marker for him, which they did about two years ago.

Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: ANSWER for Richard from Alabama relative to George W. Threlkeld
Your Question or Comment !! -: Since you didn't specify a home state for Threlkeld, I'm supposing from an entry in Brown's work. George W. Threlkeld was a member of the 15th Pa. Vol., Company I, mustering in April 20, 1861. All of Company I was captured on skirmish line duty and sent to various prisons before Salisbury. (Suggest you read Samuel Bates' History of Penna. Vol., 1861-1865, the chapter on the 15th Pa. which describes his capture by Col. Ashby and his prison journeys. If this is Turner Ashby, you can have some satisfaction that my wife's gg grandfather's unit killed him on June 6, 1862, at Harrisonburg, VA.) Threlkeld was released May 21-28, 1862, at New Bern, NC (Burnsides' troops)and sent to New York on the steamer "Guide."

Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: ANSWER for Carolyn from Arizona relative to Jefferson Dunn
Your Question or Comment !! -: The info you have on Dunn is probably the best you are going to find. Salisbury records are almost non-existent except in Brown's book and Dunn is not listed there. Bate's history of the 211th Regiment shows 54 members of the picket detail, including Dunn, were captured the night of November 17, 1864. He probably spent some time in a Richmond prison before going to Salisbury. When Salisbury closed in Feb. 1864, those prisoners in the worst of health were sent by train back to Richmond.

Originally, he enlisted August 6, 1861, in Company B, 13th Penna. Reserves (aka 42nd Pa. Vol. but best known as the Bucktails). On June 1, 1864 he transferred to the 190th Pa. Vol. when the 13 regiments of the Pa. Reserves mustered out. The 190th & 191st Pa. Vol. Regiments were formed by the remnants of the Reserves who re-enlisted or still had time left on their original 3-year enlistment. Also some possible relatives in Company B, John E. Shatto and Alexander P. Shatto

Your Question or Comment !! -: Greetings, My g g grandfather Abram Lewis Long was part of the 39th Iowa Infantry Company D. We have many records supporting this. However, Abe was one of the 101 men captured at shady grove by General Forrest in late December 1862. I am searching for which prison he went to. The story says the prisoners didn't meet back up with their regiment until October 1863. Which to me sounds like they were all imprisoned together. Why is there no record of which prison these men were held at? What were the conditions like? I have many questions. I will hunt and hunt each confederate prison until I find some shred of evidence. Thank you for your help. Sean

However the Long's side stops after Abe's dads records are lost. But family legend goes back to the Revolutionary war and fighting for the patriots in Virgina. Some day I hope to find those records!

Most of the unit did go to Salisbury, NC but a few were held in Richmond, VA. Pension and service records might be your only hope for an answer to which prison. If you do find out, please let me know as I am also involved in the Salisbury Confederate Prison Association and I will add his name to their records if he was in Salisbury. Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: James E Reed
Your Question or Comment !! -: I noticed on your webpage a small section about James E Reed. He was my ggrandfather. I have found his information from the Milwaukee Soldiers Home. That document has his enlistment, discharge dates as well as the statement about his ailment from being in Saulbury Prison NC. I would give anything to find out if these are one and the same. His history is very vague, and this military history has been the first and best information I have found on him. Anyway, since the information you presented was only a paragraph, and it mentions a story that was about him...I would give anything to find out what that story is, or where it can be found. Also, if you could give me any information as to how to track down any further personal wartime information, I would be so appreciative, as I am very unlearned in these matters but desperately want to learn more. Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: George Marley
Your Question or Comment !! -: George Marley , my great-great grandfather, was born 1 Apr 1836 in England, came to America, and served as a private in possibly the 99th New York Infantry, Company L, during the Civil War. According to the 1890 Garrett County, Maryland Veterans Census, he was a prisoner of war at the "Salsberry Prison" for one year. He died in Garrett County 23 Mar 1941. He is one of my few ancestors who surpassed 100 years of age which I find particularly remarkable if he spent a year in a Civil War prison during his 3+ year military term of Civil War service. I also had two kin persons, (sons of a great-great-great grandfather's brother)that served in the 6th North Carolina Senior Reserves. I wonder if either Jonathan or Thomas Marshill may have stood guard over George Marley??
How did you discover the info you have now?: Family lore and research. I have used Ancestry and various county Genweb sites for most military records.

Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: answer for Tony from Pa on Friday, Nov. 13, 2009, relative to Samuel Keckler.
Your Question or Comment !! -: I research the Pa. Reserves and the 190th & 191st Pa. Vol. My informal records show a Samuel Keckler as a member of Co. K, 30th Pa. Vol. and then Co. A, 190th Pa. Vol. He died in Salisbury Prison in Feb. 1865. I'm guessing he was captured at the Weldon Railroad on August 19,1864, when most of the 190th & 191st were surrounded and captured.

Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: Silas Saxton Tucker
Your Question or Comment !! -: Private or Corporal in the 3rd New York Cavalry, Co. F. He was my 3rd great-grandfather. According to a 1932 genealogical entry, Silas died either in November or December of 1864 at Salisbury. This seems to have been a time of exponential death rates among the Union prisoners. I just want to see if his name is listed. Obviously, these people in 1932 knew something of his death. I would just like to have a bit of closure for this soul. Thank you.
