First name is OK -: Alice Burns Tucker
State you are from? -: Connecticut
Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: Charles R. Burns (or Burnes)
Your Question or Comment !! -: This is an update to an earlier comment I wrote about my great-great grandfather Charles R. Burns/Burnes, a Private in the Union Army who was captured at the Battle of Cedar Creek. I just received a copy of his Civil War Pension file from the National Archives in Washington, DC, and I now know for certain the dates he was held at Salisbury Prison. Although Charles was originally brought to Libby Prison following his capture on October 19, 1864, he was transferred to Salisbury Prison on November 4, 1864.
How did you discover the info you have now?: I recommend to everyone doing research on a Civil War veteran to contact the National Archives in Washington, DC and order a copy of the veteran's Military file and/or Civil War Pension File. The pension file contains detailed family information. The records I received from the National Archives include details about my great-great grandfather that were previously unknown by my family, including a physical description of him, his street address in New Haven, CT, and the existence of a first wife that Charles divorced because--according to the records--she had committed adultery. Civil War veterans' files can be requested on-line at www.archives.gov. They can also be requested by writing to The National Archives and Records Administration, 8601 Adelphi Road, College Park, MD 20740-6001. There is a fee for the information but to me it was well worth it!

First name is OK -: Alice Burns Tucker
State you are from? -: Connecticut
Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: Charles R. Burns (or Burnes)
Your Question or Comment !! -: My great-great grandfather Charles R. Burns (sometimes spelled Burnes) was a Private in the Union Army in the Civil War. He served with Company B of the 12th Battalion of the Connecticut Volunteers under Captain James B. Roche. On October 19, 1864 he was captured by Confederate soldiers at the Battle of Cedar Creek in Virginia and taken to Libby Prison in Atlanta. Although this has not yet been verified, we believe that at some point he may have been transferred to Salisbury Prison. Charles Burns survived the Civil War--even the deplorable conditions of his imprisonment--and lived until the age of 60 after marrying and having 4 sons and 8 grandchildren. One of his grandsons was my grandfather, and he used to tell us that Charles was able to survive his imprisonment by picking beans out of the garbage in the cellar of the prison where he was being held. I am currently awaiting information from the National Archives which should provide additional details about my great-grandfather's service during the war.
How did you discover the info you have now?: Family history and a very old copy of my great-grandfather's Civil War discharge paper have provided most of the information I have to date. In addition, Charles R. Burns is mentioned in the book "Record of Service of Connecticut Men in the Army and Navy of the U.S. during the War of the Rebellion." He is also listed in the "Catalog of Connecticut Volunteer Organizations" under "Recruits for Infantry Company B, 12th Battalion of the Connecticut Volunteers."

Your Question or Comment !! -: After Franz Spamer immigrated from Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany, he enlisted in the 11th Mass. Infantry June 13, 1861. He participated in the first battle of Bull Run (July 21, 1861). He was wounded in the side by an armored ball and taken prisoner by the Confederate Cavalry. Franz Spamer was actually held prisoner for 10 months and 10 days in the following Southern prisons: Richmond, Virginia; Tuscaloosa and Salisbury, N.C. He was exchanged on Parole. His NARA records indicate that he deserted at Annapolis, MD 20 Aug 1862. He applied for a Pension but was denied because there was no record of an honorable discharge. His name is misspelled in the list of POW's. His name is shown as Specmer, K. 11th Mass. It should be spelled: Spamer, F.
