Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: Malcolm McDougall/Confederate Arsenal Employee/Captured by General Stoneman
Your Question or Comment !! -: My Great Grandfather Malcolm McDougall was a soldier/arsenal employee at salisbury. He was captured and sent to Camp Chase. Wanted to know the most accurate description of the capture. I do have a copy of a story of a soldier that describes his travels over the mountains to Tenn then Ohio. My Great Grandfather was a musician and I remember my grandmother telling me that he entertained the union soldiers. His obituary tells of him leading a band in a battle where he was later captured. Don't know if that was Salisbury or not. Does N.C. have any records on the Arsenal employees. I think he was transferred from Richmond as the war got worse in Virginia.

Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: Edward D. Snead; Charles Henry Snead; Walter Robert Snead
Your Question or Comment !! -: These men were my gg-uncles and were guards at the prison in 1864-65. E. D. was a medical doctor and Captain of Snead's Company -- Charles and Walter were Lieutenants. Charles was captured during Stoneman's raid. I believe that Edward was there as a military man and not as a physician. Walter was a 16-year-old student at Trinity when the war started and probably went to Salisbury with Braxton Craven but I do not have confirmation of this. I have a copy of his letter saying that B.Craven wanted the boys to have uniforms. I have some basic information but I continue to look for any mention of these men in letters and documentation. If you can help I would love to hear from you. Thanks, Candy (BTW, all of you with relatives who were at Salisbury should consider joining the Salisbury Confederate Prison Assn. - go to salisburyprison.org - the best $10 buy I know of !!)

Grover served two tours of duty with the 9th NY Cavalry (aka Stoneman's Cavalry & Westfield Cavalry) and would have been at the prison at the time it was burnt. Orin was wounded at Boonesboro, MD and then re-entlist and was again wounded at Cold Harbor, VA, but served to the end of the War. He was at Appamatox, VA for Lees surrender and in Washington, DC for the Victory Parade. This is a great piece of information...If General Stoneman was there...so was my Greatgrandfather. Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: Gideon Luke Roach
Your Question or Comment !! -: Gideon L. Roach (age 17) joined the "Rockingham Rangers" a horse cavalry unit, "company D" of the 63rd Regiment NCT, on July 7, 1862. The unit trained for several months in NC then moved up into the battle zones of northern VA and rode into PA to skirmish with Federal Troops there. Cavalry troops were mostly used for hit and run operations. Gideon's mounted unit moved through the Shenandoah valley and crossed the Potomac river on an assault on Washington DC July 13, 1863, where they remained through the night and crossed back into VA on July 14. Gideon's unit joined up with a larger force under General Longstreet and were involved in a major battle with the Pickets on July 31, 1863. This same date, Gideon L. Roach was reported as a deserter and was gone for 2 months before he turned himself in on Sept 28, 1863. He was court -martialed, convicted of desertion and sentenced to prison (Salisbury?)on January 8, 1864. He remained incarcerated in prison until Dec 1, 1864 when he was released. I believe he was released back to his unit to serve out his term. He spent his later years in DIXIE MANOR Retirement Home for Confederate Soldiers in California. I understand he was honored for distinguished service. I would love to piece all his information together if I could.
