Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: Rollin e. Larned
Your Question or Comment !! -: Rollin Larned was with the 8th Vermont Infantry and was captured while on Picket at Cedar Creek October 1864. He was taken to Belle Isle but transferred to "a hospital in Salisbury" where he died, one letter says on October 31, 1864, but another record says November 1st. I don't know where he was born, or if he was buried in Salisbury or brought home to Vermont. He may have lived in Barnard, VT, and he enlisted from Granville, VT. does anyone have any other information on this person?

Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: The special parole in Feb-March, 1865
Your Question or Comment !! -: My Gr Gr Grandfather (Francis Marion Havens) was captured at Saltville,Va. on Dec.16th,1864. He arrived in Salisbury on Christmas eve. He and two other guys from his unit(12th ky.Cav.) wrote several letters and sworn affidavits about the misery and suffering that they went through while imprisoned there. They were paroled along with 2,900 other P.O.W.'s in a special exchange for sick prisoners. They started thier journey to freedom in late Feb.1865 and they were all eventually paroled on March 2nd at N.E. Ferry on the Black River, outside of Wilmington,N.C.. The letters that I have contain information that I'm sure most of the people on this webpage probably don't want know. The suffering that the men went through is almost too heartbreaking to read. It was a miracle from God that anyone survived "the Hell of Salisbury".

Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: Just a comment...
Your Question or Comment !! -: Thanks you for the map of the burial trenches of Salisbury Prison. My great-great Grandfather James Parsons of the 16th. Maine Co.A Infantry is most likely buried in one of them. The State of Maine Archives says he died there in Dec. of 1864. He left behind a widow Hannah Proctor Parsons and six children. On a small card in their files is his physical description, 5'6" inches tall, brown hair, gray eyes and of light complextion. Hannah received a pension of $6.00 a month, and each child $2.00 a month until the age of 16. Last Dec. I stood at Weldon Railroad in Va. some where near where he was taken prisoner in Aug. of 1864. Did he die in vain, I say no, it took that war to make us truly the United States of America. I hope History does not forget these people, of all wars fought I belive this one was the most rightous of them all, it was for all of us North and South, Black and White. Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: Joyce, Luther, Mason, Hyatt or Earwoods
Your Question or Comment !! -: What a fantastic site! I am looking for any information about the above surnames in the Civil War. I do know that my gr.gr.gr.grandfather Hamilton Luther and several of his brothers fought for the CSA. (Mostly with the 25th and 60th. NC) Ham was taken prisoner at Pt. Look Out Md., released and then re-joind after one of his brothers was killed in the Atlanta campaign.
In looking at some of the postings from other people and realising how sore the wounds still are--even 140 years after the war--I suppose it goes to show that the war is still being fought. Hind sight is 20/20, but its funny how history still repeats itself. I knew of the prison in Salsbury, but never comprehended the fact that there were so many prisoners there. The 1860's were a bad time for everyone.
If anyone has any infor on any of the above names serving for either side, I would love to hear from you. Thanks

Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: RE: William McAmis
Your Question or Comment !! -: William's story is a little murky, so I suspect there is a lot more to the story, but here's how it goes: William apparently enlisted with his brother Isaac in Company G 8th East Tennessee volunteer infantry USA in May of 1863. While scouting around in the mountains, seeking a way through enemy lines to join their unit, William & Isaac were captured by Confederate soldiers 13 Aug 1863. They were taken to Lovejoy, GA and impressed into service with Marshall's Tennessee Artillery, CSA. They attempted to escape after about two and a half months. They were tracked down and imprisoned at Salisbury. During Stonemanís Raid (when Stonemanís U.S. Calvary occupied the town of Salisbury, Apr. 12, 1865, and destroyed the Confederate warehouses, supplies, and prison) the brothers were found by Union Troops in the Confederate prison with grey uniforms and were sent to Camp Chase, OH. Upon taking an oath to confirm their allegiance to the USA, they were released on 13 Jun 1865 to return home.

William received a disability pension -- his physical exam noted arthritis and deafness.

Thanks for the website and photos. I visited the Salisbury National Cemetery a couple of months ago and your photos do a wonderful job of capturing the serenity of this historic place.

Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: Pvt. Andrew Sautter, Co. I, 144th Ohio Volunteer Infantry (NG)
Your Question or Comment !! -: Pvt Andrew Sautter is my great great uncle. He was a POW at Salisbury and died there Jan 1, 1865. When I visited the Salisbury Cemetery a couple of years ago, the Cemetery office had him listed as having been burried in the trench graves. Andrew's last name was mispelled in the record, one of the T's in Sautter having be changed to an L.

Questions:
1) How would I go about getting the spelling of the name Sautter corrected in the Cemetery records for Andrew.

and

2) Would it be possible to get a memorial stone placed in Salisbury Cemetery with Andrew Sautter's name and military service information on it. Since he is buried in the trenches he doesn't have a head stone.

Comment: When I visited Salisbury Cemetery I thought it was a very nice place, it's appearance was well kept. My visit was a very moving experience.

Thank you very much
Kim

Your Question or Comment !! -: Pvt.John Tingler(my great-grandfather) was captured at Cedar Creek on Oct. 19, 1864. He was with Capt. Clammer's Company C of 11th regiment WV Infantry volunteers. According to his widow's pension application file, he died of dysentery on Dec. 16, 1864 while a prisoner at Salisbury POW camp. I am interested in knowing where he is buried, is there a headstone? Also would like to know if he was awarded any medal as other pow's were and if that medal went to his widow or remains unclaimed. I wish to honor his sacrifice by learning everything that I can about his service to our country.

Who do you need info on in reference to Prison or civil war? -: edmund gerry
Your Question or Comment !! -: I am looking for an Edward (or Edmund) Geary (or Geery, Garey, Gerry, Gairy, etc.), my great-great grandfather. Family tradition says that he was an Irish citizen who was imprisoned by either Union or Confederate troops during the Civil War and either was killed or died there or shortly thereafter. He left a wife, Mary (maiden name Smith), an English citizen, who also died during the war, and at least one daughter, Mary Jane, who apparently was orphaned and placed in an orphanage in Tennessee until about 1867. She reported being born in Tennessee, so it is possible that this is where the family lived. Mary Jane died in 1927. It is said that she tried unsuccessfully to get some kind of help from the government due to her father's death. I can't find any records that seem to relate to this situation. I took note of the Edmund Gerry listed in the Salisbury, NC prison (in the Adjutant general records of Civil War Prisoners of War) and wonder if there is any other information regarding him. It is possible that this could be my ancestor. Thanks in advance for your assistance.
